Filter Your Own Water, Save Money, Save the Environment

Is fluoride in water good or bad? Where do you stand? Part III

You have that option to reject or to embrace fluoride use in your water or diet. Any chemical you put in your body could potentially become poison if the right dose is not taken. Experts on both sides of the arguments have their opinions.

But I think fluoride is good if used as recommended by your physician, at least, to prevent tooth caries. If the concentration is higher than the MCL, then you need to do something.

In the United States, water supply authorities are required to send you an annual report to consumers. It is called the Consumer Confidence Report (CCR). The CCR should contain what parameters were tested in the previous year.

You can even purchase a home fluoride testing kit to confirm the fluoride concentration in your water.

Got too much fluoride in your drinking water?

Take action but . . .

Remember that the public water supply is not just for you but for others who may consider additional fluoride intake a necessity. No matter how strongly you feel about fluoride in water, the government cannot please everyone. They have to do what they think is scientifically and medically necessary to protect the public.

Majority rules!

If you believe your water contains too much fluoride, a fluoride filter can reduce the fluoride in your water to a safe level. Fluoride filters are available in various types and brands.

If you believe the fluoride in your water is too high for you . . .

Buy a water filter or a treatment device that can reduce this chemical. There are varieties of fluoride filters you can buy. They come as countertop, wholehouse, or faucet-mount filters. While these treatment devices can reduce fluoride in your water, they can also remove other unwanted chemicals; you will enjoy fluoride-free, healthy water.

Reverse Osmosis filter is a good example of a treatment unit that can reduce fluoride along with several other contaminants. Look for a filter certified under NSF/ANSI 58. They are filters that have been tested and certified to reduce contaminants concentrations to less than or equal to the permissible level.

Some countertop and undersink filters come with the reverse osmosis feature. Countertop filters are good if you cannot modify your plumbing systems because of your lease, or you simply want to filter at one location in the house.

  1. You are absolutely right and I don’t disagree with you that fluoride could be unhealthy. So are other unhealthy foods. Mind you, water can be unhealthy if you drink more than what your body can take. Millions of children depend on fluoride to survive the painful tooth decay.

Center for Disease Control (CDC) stated that “communities with fluoridated drinking water in the United States, Australia, Britain, Canada, Ireland, and New Zealand show striking reductions in tooth decay–those with fluoridated drinking water systems have 15-40 percent less tooth decay.” What have you got to say to those that benefit from fluoridation.

Is anyone complaining about chlorine in water? It surely helps kill bacteria in water before they kill us.

If you think it’s too much in your water, use a water filter.

  2. Areas with higher levels of fluoride in the water supply have increased cases of neurotoxicity, bone cancer, Alzheimer’s and other illnesses. Fluoride harms the brain, kidneys, bones and thyroid glands.

Did you hear about the fluoride contamination issue in Australia?

The main reason for using fluoride in municipal water supply is to prevent wear and tear on pipes . Fluoride forms a film coating inside pipes, which prevents corrosion. Dental benefit is only a cover up.

  4. Carol,

    Your point is well taken.

I understand that both sides of the arguments are trying to convince the public that they have their best interests at heart.

Let’s face it; you can be harmed by drinking too much water. Anything, no matter how essential it is to our health, can become harmful to our body if not taken in moderation.

So, to me if a child (rich or poor), needs a medication to improve his or her health, I think parents along with their physicians should make the best parental and professional judgments in accordance with established government regulations.

  5. Fluoride should never be put to a majority vote. You wouldn’t go into your neighbor’s medicine cabinet and take their drugs. You shouldn’t be allowed to prescribe fluoride for me via a referendum when you don’t know my health condition or whether I have teeth or not.

Contrary to what you’ve been lead to believe, fluoride is actually more harmful to low-income children who are often those with the poorest diets and poorest teeth. Without proper nutrition, people suffer from fluoride’s toxicity even more.

Low income people need dentists not fluoride.
80% of dentists refuse Medicaid patients and 108 million Americans lack dental insurance.

  6. My response to all the comments is that, each person has to make a choice as to what is best for his or her health, and for the health of their families. Anyone that has ever gone through a dental problem due of fluoride defiency will understand.

It’s also known that high fluoride concentration in water can affect teeth and other health issues. That’s why we pay taxes so the governments do what is right, at least. The contaminant standards set by governments are for the interest of everyone needing fluoride in their diets, and for those who don’t want to have any of it.

Many local and state governments establish some guidance on the use of fluroide. Follow the applicable guidance in your locality. These guidance were developed based on scientific evidence that fluoride added to water in the right amount is safe and effective in controlling tooth decay.

Some infants and young children need it in their diets; there are ways to reduce the fluoride in your drinking water if you believe it’s not for you.

  7. Fluoride in any of its forms, is virtually useless and certainly dangerous and has no place in the human diet or the wider ecosystems. Howq can a “safe” (lol) dosage of this muck ever be administered via the water supply when people drink varying amounts of water daily and also get fluoride from other sources such as medication, food produced in fluoridated areas or even tea. Also many have medical conditions sensitive to fluoride. Medical ehics say Do No Harm and the patients must be asked before andy medication can be administered. Politicians and ALCOA or the pesticides industry are not qualified to priescribe drugs of any kind and certainly not this kind of crud.
