A distiller or filter can be very effective to get rid of contaminants that make your water taste or smell bad. Factors that can affect the decision to choose either a water distiller or filter include cost, maintenance, or just a personal preference.
Some water distillers are very expensive so when you compare the cost of a standard distillation system with a typical countertop, undersink, or a whole house filtration system, it may be worth it to go with a water filter. You can spend less money of a water filter just to remove some common household contamination problems like chlorine taste and odor, metals and a few more. But water distillers can remove far more contaminants to give you pure water.
Distilled water is purer than filtered water but using a distiller has its disadvantage. Distillers can also allow dangerous VOC’s to escape with your “pure water.” Distillers will boil water to steam and during that process some organic materials like chloroforms and solvents may escape with the steam into the distilled water.
Maintaining a water distiller or filter can also play a big factor in the decision-making. Distillers use electricity while filtration systems, except pitcher/carafe, rely on the house water pressure to push water through filtration media. Proper handling of steam is also needed for a distiller. Regular cleaning is important for a distiller; and timely cartridge replacement is also critical for filters because filter media also can harbor germs if not replaced frequently as recommended.

Lastly, the choice between a water distiller or filter could be a matter of preference in the taste of water that comes from each of these systems. Some may not like the bland taste of distilled water. It’s also said that the longer distilled water stay unused the less pure it becomes. On the other hand, if a filter is not replaced on time, the filtered water may become even more harmful than the unfiltered water.
But most importantly, when deciding between a water distiller or filter, it’s important to look for one that has been independently tested and certified. For instance, a filter that will likely give the best performance should have been tested and certified under NSF/ANSI Standards 42 & 53; and a certified distiller should be listed under NSF/ANSI Standard 62.
